Something Great Page 54

“Who cares, Jenna? Don’t worry too much. Just take it one day at a time. He actually may turn out to be something great. Anyway…it’s nine. I need to get some work done, and you need to go to work tomorrow since you took Monday off.”

“I know.” And there, those words were spoken again…something great. I wanted him to be my something great.

Becky was already up and walking toward her bedroom door. “Oh…don’t forget. We’re going out to lunch this Sunday to celebrate with Nicole.”

“I won’t. Good night, Becky.” I headed to my room.

“Good morning, Lisa, Rachel,” I cheered, walking in. Then I turned to my right. “Good morning, Dan, Eric.” After they greeted me with a smile, I went straight to my desk.

“You feeling better, Jenna?” Lisa asked. “You must have been really sick. It seemed like everyone who went to New York got the bug.”

“Yes,” I agreed, blushing, wondering if they could see right through me that yesterday I was out because of Max. Not liking the attention on me, I changed the subject. “Are you feeling better, too?”

“Yes...thank you. I had a twenty-four hour bug. I guess that’s what you would call it.”

After I told them about my trip to New York, we got right back to work. Things were crazy since I hadn’t been there for several days. I thanked Lisa for taking care of what needed to get done while I was out. Though I knew I didn’t need to, I made a mental note to get her something extra special for Christmas.

Typing a reply on my email, I jerked slightly when my phone started to make that buzzing, vibrating sound. Looking at my cell phone, my face turned warm and I wondered if they could tell.

What are you doing?

Haha…what do you think?

I hope you’re naked.

No…lol!

Do you have any plans for lunch?

No, but I really need to work. You know…cause of yesterday.

Would you like me to repeat yesterday?

Hmmm…yes…maybe…no! We are at work.

I’m coming!

I didn’t understand what he meant by that, but that kind of sounded hot. I didn’t need to wait to see what he meant. After few minutes, sounds of footsteps increased. Max walked through the door.

“Mr. Knight,” Lisa said quickly. “How may we help you?”

“Hello, Lisa, Rachel, Dan, Eric.” He grinned nicely to them as he said their names. I loved how he was professional and friendly to his employees, unlike some bosses I’d worked with before. Then Max turned to me, trying to hold in a smile. “I’m actually here to see Jenna.”

“Sure.” Lisa sat back down and turned her head to the computer screen, but I could see her peering from the corner of her eyes.

I swallowed nervousness down my throat and tried to be professional. “Mr. Knight. Won’t you please take a seat?”

Max settled into the chair and scooted himself forward…way forward, till his chair was right at my desk, sitting on the opposite side of me. I wondered what I had done wrong. When he gave me his biggest grin, my shoulders relaxed. “Lunch,” he whispered.

I didn’t say a word as I wondered if they had heard him. Not wanting to speak, I shook my head. Max stood up, pulled his cell phone out of his pocket, sat back down, and started texting. In a way I was glad his attention was not on me, hoping he would be called for a meeting or something… anything. I was starting to feel really embarrassed. Nobody knew I was dating Max. Then my phone vibrated. Wondering who it could be, I looked. Since Max was busy I didn’t think there was any harm in it.

Come to lunch with me!

He was sitting in front of me, texting me. My lips perked up, trying hard not to laugh. I texted back.

I can’t. I already told you

If you don’t come with me, I’m going to carry you out of here. You decide.

He’s asking me to decide when there really isn’t a choice, since I don’t want him to pick me up in front of everyone. Shoot! He wouldn’t…would he? I peered up to see him nodding and the serious look in his eyes. Though I didn’t know Max that well, from what I’d experienced in the short amount of time being with him, there was no stopping him whatsoever. When he wanted something, he would find a way to get it.

Where are we going?

I have lunch ready in my office.

Oh…why didn’t you say so in the first place?

What would be the fun in that? And by the way, I’d rather have you for lunch. The dress frames your body nicely. Not to mention easy access.

I started blushing, giggling…really giggling, then realized I was in Max’s world and not in reality. Turning to my left and right, their eyes were curious, most likely wondering why we were texting and not speaking, if they even knew we were doing that.

“Ms. Mefferd. I’ll see you in five minutes.” Max winked and stood up.

“See you in five, Mr. Knight,” I said softly, trying my best not to look up to reveal my red face to my coworkers. After a few minutes, I inhaled a deep breath and stood up. “Are you going to lunch?” I asked, trying to pretend nothing happened.

“Do you want to come with us?” Lisa asked.

I had already headed for the door. “I believe it’s a lunch meeting,” I fibbed, sort of. Pulling the door toward me that was already ajar, I turned to Lisa again. “Thanks though. Have a good one.”

“Okay,” Lisa said in a funny tone. “Have a good one.” That tone was even stranger…too friendly. They knew. He had made it obvious.
